HELP Please.....Removing Lower Leg of Mariner

I've searched high and low for exact information on how to remove the lower leg of a 1987 2 stroke Mariner 25hp. I can undo the 4 bolts and drop the lower unit by about 1/2" then it won't go any further. There is a threaded rod that goes up from the lower leg into the outboard (gear link?) which has a nut which can be loosened down towards the lower leg and a further longer nut above it which wont budge. Does this have to be loosened, in which case screwed clock wise or anti clock wise or is there a secret nut / bolt I cant find.
Im new to all of this so would really appreciate some help please - all I'm trying to do is change the impellor !! Begining to wish I'd had it services proffesionally, but I'm determinded to at least TRY and learn.
THANKS IN ADVANCE....

Have you disconnected the gear link rod from under the powerhead? Its a little clip that needs to come off to allow the gearbox to drop. See attachment, item number 18.

Send a message via Skype™ to benc
Once you undo the clip, you pull the bit of the clip that moved towards you and it slides out, then you can remove the link rod
