Honda 130hp 4 Stroke
Do you guys think that £2500 is a good deal for an approx 4 year old Honda 130hp, 4 Stroke that has been raced professionally and very routinely serviced by a Honda agent.

Sounds like a good deal to me, but then again I'm certainly no expert,but I don't think you would get much change out of £9-10k for a new one and you would think it will have been well looked after.
A good tip I was told this week in a marina was to ask the people who service the engine you are thinking of buying what it is like .
I'm sure someone with more knowledge will post a reply and tell you better but I hope this helps

Raced or ragged?
Even though it has been routinely srviced by Honda agents it has been raced and probably has a lot of hours on it (most of which have been at high RPM). Find out what hours it has done first and be aware that it may be due for a rebuild soon. I don't know how long on Honda 4 strokes but the Opti's have a 1000hr life before Merc/Mariner recommend a rebuild!!

One of the Directors of the company that I work at has raced this boat for this season only, in the Honda 4 Stroke series.
Last year this same boat package won the championship with a diffrent owner. don't know what the finer details are but basicaly the series is going to upgrade the HP to 150 and hence a new engine!

Honda 130
Andy, I dont know whether it is of importance to you but bear in mind that the 130 Honda 4 stroke is incredibly heavy at 208Kg.
I dont know what your existing engine is but you pay a pretty heavy penalty weight wise with the Honda.
Merc 125 - 158 Kg
Yam 130 - 167 Kg
(OK both 2 strokes but....)
You may find what you save in fuel you lose in performance due to the increased weight.
Only my thoughts - just in case it matters!

Personaly I doubt if it has one many hours as race boats dont race that often. However, the hours it has done will have been hard ones. I think 2.5k is probably a reasonable deal, try and beat them down to 2k and it will probably be a very gooddeal.
Tue.. you say Mercury reccomend rebuild time at 1000hours, I have an opti that is nearly at that after 2 years and runs like it is new, I shall not even consider having it rebuilt. As a matter of interest where did you read those reccomendations.

Got Agree with Nick and Stuart here
Buy the Honda put it on a Hull, sell it to someone who doesn't realise how disapointing these engines are then buy an Opti with the profit.
I don't think you'll be able to flog it to Nick H though cos he's sussed the problem.
2.5 k is a good price cheaper is better. I don't think you get too win championships without practicing
Don't forget it's a Honda Accord 2.0 litre lump, so things like pistons, cylinder heads and stuff could come from a Scrappie

If it has been raced, it will have been well serviced, I guess you mean that Solent Honda have looked after it if it has been in the 4 stroke series, I don't think that you will have any problems and even so you will have another year on the warranty.
I had the old media boat with a 130 and it never missed a beat, left me with 450 hours on it.
Now got a 225 and it is even better!

If you want to know about Honda 130's and the Honda race boats, you need to PM Extreme Marine on www.boatmadforum.co.uk They built the first of the race boats, including the one your buying the engine from, and know all the problems with these motors!

Its in the workshop manual I think, but was told it by another Mariner engineer at work whan I was looking at getting a 200 Opti that had 900hrs on it.

Tue, thanks. I have had a look at the manual tho and can't find it. (im probably blind). Do you work with Opti's then. Im amazed they reccommend a rebuild then, I think it's qite early. I suppose it depends who has owned it.

Yes I do work with Opti's and have a certificate to prove it ( ohh get me. ).
We only have a few in our area but we are the service centre in Torbay for them and have all the gadgets and gumph for all of them. I want one for my boat eventually or two would be better. (Twin 75s or 90s....... Opps dreaming now ) . IMHO better than the Fichts. Lighter too.

what oil is used in the optimaxs premimum plus or the opti oli the cd manuel suggestsd tcw3 premimum plus it dosent mention opti oil

The 75/90/115 are recomended to use Quicksilver Premium Plus TCW3 or Optimax 2 oil.
The 135/150/175/200/225 are recomended to use Quicksilver Premium Plus TCW3 oil.
As the 75/90/115 are new out the literature we have recieved for them includes the Optimax oil which is quite new to the market. I would imagine the new 135/150/175/200/225 can also use the Optimax oil.

That's good 'cos Wavehumper's just bought a 5000 gallon barrel of the stuff for his 150 Opti
