Hi Western, the timing belt doesn't seem to be an issue. The driven timing pulley is what breaks. I have asked around and the parts guys say they don't sell that many, so maybe it is just an occasional failure.

Answering my own question...the timing mark on the flywheel IS in line with the keyway.

Well I'm going to be ordering one of these tomorrow. Still produce them at £130. None in stock but will be producing a few while mine is getting made.

The makeshift repair prior to me ordering the engineered one. Apparently the plastic had worn and the pulley dropped, chucking off the belt. Not going to use the temp set up, this was merely to test the engine.

I've just had this failure and was towed back to shore. Took a few days until I checked the belt and pulley and discovered fault. If you're reading this and have a BF20D (mines 2007) that's in good condition, replace that pulley for an alu or simply for a new plastic Honda one at least.
On mine, the plastic had become very brittle.

BF20 timing issue

Hi all. I know this thread is very old but I have a similar issue which no Honda tech has been able to solve.
BF20.
My engine jumps out of timing and the cam pulley looks fine...it's very solid with no signs of wear and metal bush is still flush with the plastic. I did notice that the timing belt was rather loose, so I replaced it with a new one which was much tighter, reset to the timing marks and it fired up perfectly, but jumped out of timing again after about 30 seconds. When flywheel is on it's timing mark, the Cam pulley timing mark is about 1/8th of a turn late or maybe about 8 teeth.
Any suggestions???

Hello Gerry,

Mine recently went and once replaced I turned the engine over, all seemed ok.
I then connected the spark plug and off she went.
I went for a quick spin but when in idle or low revs it dies.
I did set the cam pully to the mark on the casing.
I could not find a manual to identify the crank shaft timing mark, I think it is pointing to the cam shaft. Would this possibly be the issue?
