How interchagable are props?

I thought I would start a thread on how interchangable props are. I used to Have a Yam 80 2 stroke and then bought a Merc 90 4 stroke so I know that Honda props, Merc props and Yam props can be swapped around with a little bit of fiddling with thrust washers.

But what about others?

I'm purchasing an Evinrude 150DI, what other manufacturers props fit these?

And what about Mariner (Mercury I thinks), Tohatsu etc?

Christ, this is as complex as the 'what manufacturer made what engine and who owns what' thread

Merc Blueband from 45hp up 10-11" diameter props fit all the clamshells and later non bigfoot 2-strokes. (this is good as you can get props really cheap to try out)
Early 2 blade and bronze Mercury props don't fit anything newer than '67 I think(may be '66). They lasted really well so they often pop up on ebay cheap but they are often wrongly listed as fitting the later models.

Most Merc props fit most Mariners of comparable size (usually the same engine)
There's a few Mariner engines I'm not sure of-the Mariner 40hp twin cylinder from the '80s was made by Yamaha and identical to the 40hp Yam. The 48,50,55 and 60hp twin cylinder Mariners were also rebadged Yamahas so I don't know if the props will swap to a merc.

(below is based on data supplied not personal experience)
Yamahas have 3 gearcase types I've found while searching for props for mine. Mostly the V4 props don't fit the triples of above 60hp. The 40-60hp Yam props don't appear to fit the bigger triples either.

I think a comparison chart is needed here.

From my experiance from the last few days, a Yam 115 prop will fit a Johnson/Suzi 225.....As will a 175 Evinrude prop.

This is a bit complicated but I hope this will help, this is not set in stone as it all depends on who the propeller is manufactured by and particularly which type of bush arrangement, the list is for genuine props

For 3” gearcase generally about 30-70hp engines.
A yamaha propeller will also fit with different spacers & thrust washers the following, mercury, mariner, Suzuki, Honda
A Mercury propeller will so fit mariner and with different spacers a yamaha
A Suzuki propeller will only fit Suzuki

For 4.1/4 gearcase generally 50-150 hp engines
A mercury propeller will also fit mariner and if it’s a flo torque type will also fit yamaha, Suzuki four stroke, Honda, tohatsu
A yamaha propeller will so fit with spacers mercury, mariner, honda, tohatsu
A Suzuki 2 stoke is 13 spline and will fit only Suzuki the gearcase size is also slightly smaller than the other engines so not interchangeable
A Suzuki 4 stroke is 15 spline and will also fit yamaha (also see notes for yamaha)
A OMC 2 stoke is 13 spline and will fit only OMC the gearcase size is also slightly smaller than the other engines so not interchangeable
A OMC 4 stroke is generally 15 spline and will also fit yamaha (also see notes for yamaha)

For 4.3/4” gearcase generally 125-300hp
A mercury propeller will also fit mariner and if it’s a flo torque type will also fit yamaha, Suzuki, OMC, Volvo SX, Honda
A OMC propeller will only fit OMC as the hub is longer
A Yamaha propeller will with spacers also fit mercury, Honda and some Suzuki

Note most pattern propellers Solas, Michigan, Powertech, Hydromotive etc are interchangeable between engines with different adaptors, speak to a prop supplier if you are considering adapting one for advice and to get the spacers if needed

I've used an OMC 15 spline prop with an extra thrust washer on my Suzuki 200 EFI 2-stroke.

Plus I purchased a plastic Pirahna prop, meant for a big OMC, that now fits the Suzuki after I turned about 3mm of the back of the main tube in the lathe. (JWalkers advise pre ebay purchase helped with this one).
Its only a spare, so I don't have any comparative data on how it performs

I think, if you use a flo-torq hub assenbly kit (mercury) you can get most props to fit.

That's a massively over pitched prop for that size of engine, you must have it on a very small craft. I could never use anything larger than a 17" on my 90 and RIB combo!

Also run a 22" not a problem, revs out at 5700 Suzuki says max 6000 for my engine plenty good enough , Incidentally if you look at the torque curve 5700 is just about bang on the button, So the extra 300rpm would be pretty well fruitless, people are obssessed with finding a prop that enables them to pinch every engine revolution, there was a thread about this not so long ago .

And it all goes out the window when you change the load.

True enough Andy ,the usual crowd is just my son and I so the 22" suits me fine on the odd occaision we have a full load ie the good lady and the two girls I just change to the four blade I have which if memory serves me 12 x 19 this would normally rob me of a lot of top end but that is not an issue with the lady,s on board ,mainly harbour bashing .
