I have filled and sanded ready for painting. This may well be a stupid question but do i need to prime the enitre area i'm going to paint or just the bit where the repair was done. I;m thinking of doing the entire gearbox area where it could do with a overhaul and didnt know whether it should all be primed 1st or just hit with the top coat?

After filling and prepping, flat the whole area that you wish to paint and hit with a single coat of etch primer. Then build up the paint with multiple coats of colour ( I wouldn't use Hamerite). With enough build-up of paint, you can flat with wet 1200 paper to remove the 'orange peel'. This, followed by cutting back with Farecla G3 paste and then a polish could give a better than factory finish.
I found it easier use several coats of etch primer sanded to a smooth finish rather than trying to remove any imperfections from the top coat as each layer goes down.
Either way so long as your patient and your prep is good you shouldn't have any issues. I'd never painted anything before in my life before painting my motor, so a first time job using pressure pack cans i think it came out allright.

Thanks for the advice, just got a couple more areas to prep to make sure its all 100% then willl start with the etch primer.
Here are a couple of pics on how i got on spraying the cav plate and gearbox etc after filling holes left by fins.
I dont think its too bad given its my first ever go with the spray cans. I also still need to polish and wax the bits i have painted yet but the can states to leave it for a week now.
Now do i do the rest of the outboard and the prop? As you can see it has some chips on the back. My only concern is that i dont want to take the engine apart to do it as i would never get is back together again, and i'm not sure what sort of finish i would get spraying it as is.

Fair point on leaving it to fully cure. That would really pee me off.... and the wife for all the hours i've spent out there rather than putting up curtain poles etc

ha ha, my fingers will be tightly crossed when its comes out of the water next, that the paint stayed on....
When you sprayed yours did you take it all apart, i'm thinking of doing the entire leg but wondered if i could just mask and get a good result, you can see from my pics the chips i have on the back which now stand out even more.

without at least some minor cussing and a good helping of swearing!!
(oh and half a case of beer.....)
as for the rest of the leg
just take out the bolt and clean them up,
mask up and spray away...
it's the painted over or rusty bolts that'll let it down

I thought it was your outboard you had sprayed from your pics on page one, but obviosuly that was just examples for me to see
