I want a bigger outboard.
I am about to trade in my Yamaha 60FE (late 80's) with PTT for a Yamaha 90 PTT 2s. The Rib Raid in Pwllheli showed me the the new console has changed the performance of my Searider quite alot i.e. slower due to increased weight I think.
I'm getting quite a good deal, but if anybody is interrested in grabbing my Yam 60FE for a reasonable price, let me now.(£750).
What I would like to now though is what is the recommended prop for a 90hp Yam on a 5.4 Searider. I don't want anything special in the way of design and function, but the choices confuse me , ally, steel, 3 blades, 4 blades, pitch, size, colour etc.?

Narcosis,
I had a word with my mates about this, but they've decided to buy a new 75 e-tec instead.

It's probably ok, but would look out of place on your boat as it's 1990 vintage (no disrespect Narcosis, but Floater's boat is a bit shiny for it!)

It'll be more fun than a 30....Do it-you know you'll kick yourself if you don't.

Best guess a 19" prop, I have a 19" S/S Yamaha prop if you want to borrow it for the day, there is a 17" Ali in the garage too.

Thanks Pete I might just take you up on that. I'll give you a shout once I have the engine fitted.

No disrespect taken, I now my rig don't look new, more like a hard working boat. Thanks for trying your mates though.

I have seen a something similiar rigged, but as Downhilldai said, your Avon is blinging next to my Avon + engine.
I think it weights about 155kgs.
Seeing your Avon this weekend made me think about replacing or cleaning up my straking a bit, nice tidy rig you got though

Thanks really enjoyed it
155 is too heavy as its only rated to a 50 and max weight i think is 105kgs
it does feel under powered all up and i dont think that the engine is running at 100%

yeah mines about 1989/1990/1991 I think from the serial number - the acceleration is nice, ull havta grow sum balls to take it flat out, can be sketchy up front but I put that down to my boat setup,

Also I checked my engine weight and aparently its 105.5 kgs (60hp that is)
Funny that, all of a sudden its light enough to go on a Avon 4m is'nt it?.

I think that might just be what happens to an sr4 when it's going ridiculously fast....mine's a bit like that at WOT too but it's all good for an adrenaline rush I put a 14" prop on my 50 and passed 42mph with it.... Chinewalked a bit though!

It's now turned around and my mates are interested again. I think the investment in a new 75 e-tec was causing some matrimonial disharmony.
I've pm'd you my details, so give me a call if it's still available.

Ok, heres the story so far.
Had my new Yam 90 fitted Friday, looks good, early 90's model, no more pre mixing my 2stroke mix in the fuel tank.
Had a few tweeking problems to over come, but most have been sorted.
But the biggest issue has been around the prop size. It turned out the Yam 90hp came with a ally prop with 13x19 stamped on, and it performed badly, grumbled at low revs, and various other things, but mostly no top end, max revs about 4100 is all I could get.
Swapped it for another ally prop with 17 stamped on it. Made a big difference rev'd better, got revs up to 4900-5000. Doing more tests tomorrow.
Can any one tell me about the prop marked 13x19, what this means etc.
Regards
David

13x19 = 13 inch diameter, 19 inch pitch

Hi David,
My Searider 5.4m had a Mariner 2 stroke 90hp on it. Came with a 19" pitch ally prop and went well with it. Pulled 5400rpm to give about 38 ish knots.
Fitted a 20" pitch stainless prop (Lazer II) and still pulled 5400rpm for almost 40 knots (39.7 to be precise - could never quite break the 40 barrier )
Yamaha gear ratios might be different to Mariner so you might need a smaller prop, but I doubt it.
What boat speed are you getting?
With a 90hp on a 5.4m Searider the acceleration should be brutal (quicker than my 6.5 Scorpion) if all is well. Flooding hull was as standard btw - it didn't slow things down noticeably!
I hope you get it sorted - I would recommend getting a GPS on board then you can factor RPM / prop size / boat speed to determine if you have a set up problem or an engine performance problem.
Regards
