Idle minds - trade in or hold tough?

Hi all,

Somehow I've accumulated three engines at present ☺️

30hp 2004 Yamaha (4 stroke carb)
10hp 2006 Honda (4 stroke carb)
6hp 2000 Yamaha (2 stroke carb)

There's a 40hp 2007 tohatsu TLDI for sale by a local tohatsu dealer, I'm thinking of asking him would he take my 30hp & 10hp as a trade against it? Going to use the 6hp as a kicker

Worth thinking about? Or just winter boredom...

Local Yamaha dealer won't see me ever again, (long story) so kinda worried that if anything else goes wrong I'll be sorry and stuck

Any opinions welcome

Cheers
Noel

They both have it, although on the 30hp that I have the switch on the remote never worked and the tilt position sensor on the transom bracket looks seized...

I guess it all depends on the economics of it.

40hp TLDI Is for sale @€3695, the 30 & 10 together should be there or thereabouts... Can't seem to find a genuine buyer for the 10, although some people expect you to give it for next to nothing

Shouldn't cost much to change and free up some space in the shed ...

I know nothing about TLDI though, would it be a good bet?

Thanks

mmm...

I think you'll be a bit off that price at trade in values, especially if the PTT is needing attention. He may also be keen to turn that engine into cash rather than more stock.

If I was taking part ex on those engines I'd probably be looking at something around the following assuming they're in reasonable condition:

30hp with dodgy PTT - £1200ish
10hp - £1000

He offered me €1000 for the Honda 10hp earlier this year before I bought the 30hp... Hopefully get close again

Is the 40hp Tohatsu worth having at that price though?

Cheers

Sounds pretty pricey. You'd do much better selling your engines privately and buying a 40hp elsewhere. If you did that you could turn the two into a 40hp without having to add any more money.

EDIT: Sorry didn't realise until I re-read that you're working in Euros, so your 40hp works out at £2777 which is a bit better, however you would still be much better off selling yourself.

I've been try to sell the 10hp for ages, still waiting for someone genuine, now I know why a lot of "for sale" ads say "no time wasters " :-(

RegardingThe PTT on the 30hp, pump and parts works perfect, it's a little sensor (potentiometer probably)that tells the gauge clock how high or low that doesn't seem to be working, to someone in the trade it might be an easy fix?

Very easy - 1 or 2 screws to remove, unplug it, reverse procedure with new sensor!

(Assuming it's a standard Yam part as per the gubbed one I took off my old 50......)

I must admit, until that post above I thoght it was the actual PT was gubbed (i.e not moving or leaking fluids). Might be worth checking the guy with the 40 didn't make the same mistake?

Also as hinted at above - a private sale will get you a bit more cash (the dealer has to make money, so he / she will never offer you the going rate for a used engine) Having said that, as you have aleady alluded to - is that a price worth paying to remove the hassle?

I asked him was he interested and he said he'd have a look at my engines and see from there... If he low balls too much I'll try and shift them myself, but to be honest it's not something I enjoy...

Regards the sensor, is it a replace only job? No serviceable parts?

Cheers

Aye, it's that old "can you be bothered with the hassle of a private sale for an extra £nn?".

Re. the sensor, I think so. Certainly the one on my old Yam was solid (literlly - whoch is why I had to replace it!) but joking aside the sensor is essentially a variable resistor attached to a sprung arm that bears on the swivel bracket. As it lives in one of the wetter parts of the engine (over the transom where all the spray from the front of the leg is being jetted up) they tend to be sealed units.

If you are in the mood I'm sure you could break it open and find out the problem then glue it all back together - unless of course you find the resistor track is corroded to dust!

Yup, ye were right, dealer offered way below what I expected

Going to see if I can shift the 30hp myself privately, it is a good engine after all and if it doesn't sell, it'll do the job for the rest of the year...

I'm not really supposed to be looking at new engines...... But it would be rude not to ask about more details of 30 hp ptt...
