I'm looking for a new engine

After a day out diving the engine started making funny destructive noises, but being quit far from land and the wind moving in the wrong directing. We kept the engine running and got back to land without anything but nasty sounds from the engine.

After getting the boat back on shore I borrowed a compression tester and went true all the cylinders, 6-7 bar on all but one 0 bar

Off with the top

No more piston rings on one off the cylinders, but even worse, they had come off in small pieces and completely ruined the cylinder the top, and everything else on there way true the system.

So repair prices are a little more than half off what I can get the new 250 Hp Suzuki for.

I think I'm going to go for a newer 4 stroke engine, and trade in the old Vmax, But it do have a nice sound when you open it up.

Rene do you consider to sell the pistons and the piston rods of the VMax?
If you are how much? We want as many spares as we can get for our 150VMax as we will be racing it this year on a hull that it will be a supprise to you all (not from SA but something that we found liying under the sun in Greece)

Hi Nick

No the engine was not new when I bought the Cape I bought it used.

The Viper is still under construction , We are fixing it up, with a new under deck fuel tank, and a lot of other work. So I guess it will be back on the water next year. When I have some pictures I will put them up here.

Manos.
If I decide not to fix up the engine we might be able to figure something out. I will let you all know next week what I'm going to do.

Hi Rene
I would like to see some photos of the front hatch you have in the deck if you have some?
I would think there is a lot of storage to be gained from here!

Hi Nick

I don't have any pictures, but I will take some for you.

There isn't very much room down there, but you would be able to keep an anchor, chain, and about 30 meters of rope, without any problems. But you would need an anchor which will fold into not wery much, since the hatch is not very big.

But I will make som pictures this weekend

Not for the next 5 years at least and will have to see

I have friends with 4-strokes that after 2 years started having probs with the electronics on them. As in Greece we leave our boats in the water for more than 3-4 months at the time in a year it seems that the 4-strokes are not up to that treatment so far. I'm sure that they will be OK in the years to come.

Saying this, one friend has a Suzuki 140 and it has been quite good so far. No problems but is a slow engine. We tested this one and 115 Yam 2-stroke on the same boat (Falcon 640SR) and

1. the boat got on the plane quickly with both engines 19" pitch aly prop on both same weights on ex engines of course,
2. was on the plane at about 1200 revs
3. at top end it gots 42 or 44 knots (can't remember exactly) with the Suzuki and 40 knots with the Yamaha and
4. consumption was the same with both engines.

Will stick with 2-strokes for the time being
