Impeller change Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke

I have the workshop manual pages and the process seems simple enough - just a couple of queries:

1. Is any gasket/sealent required on re-seating the gear case?

2. Manual mentions 'anerobic gasket compound' on refitting the seating surface of the water tube seal -can anyone elaborate on this please?

3. Apart from the impeller are any other seals/parts needed on replacement?

Bueller, Bueller, Bueller???

Come on fellow Twatsoo owners - someone must have changed the impeller on a 9.8 on here?

Well, until you started this, I was blissfully unaware that I'd be requiring them. So more running around to be done. Still, I took the old girl out of storage for a looksee. I had winterised her back in November but she fired up and ran on the second pull

BTW, I've also checked the parts the Kieron at Ribshop sent me. I have a pair of gearbox screw gaskets (washers), an Impeller and a Pump gasket (upper) and a fuel filter. I suppose it makes sense to mate the other surfaces with compound or sealant, depending.

Ahh, got it. They must all be similar though, so someone on here must have changed an impeller at some point.

Took ours out of winter a week or two back and started lovely - still not been out on the sea yet this year due to the unbelievable weather and constant F4+. Resorted to sitting in the Zodiac with my 9 year old in the garage playing boats...

All right, I have mine done.

Spark plugs, fuel filter, Impeller, Gear box oil, Prop off, overall grease up and clean down...

Overall fairly simple. The Clymer manual is not a great help (can confuse you more than the motor will). I don't see any great need for anaerobic sealant - I just greased the water tube seal, it's not like it's going anywhere vital if it does weep a touch.

Items that I needed over and above previously stated were stainless shellock pins (spring pins) for the gear selector rod and a stainless cotter pin for the prop nut. You could reuse these if you're careful/stingy/wiLlfish, but why chance it? Ebay for £5.

I had a grease gun with Quicksilver marine grease in play and a Quicksilver gearbox oil pump c/w Tohatsu adaptor. It made a messy job very simple and saved a lot of oil (none spilled/wasted)

No big surprises. The fuel filter was dirtier than I had expected and the impeller showed signs of having been turned in reverse (maybe by turning the prop backwards while in forwards gear. Dunno. The thrust washer is still seized but I'm thinking about it. No-one handy has a bearing puller small enough for the job and heat is proving tricky. It's a very dainty little leg and I'd hate to break something that isn't broken, as it were.

It started first pull on the water and Mrs willk and I had a very nice 10 mile cruise and a big bag of Ronnie's Fish 'n' Chips to celebrate a job well done!

I'm pure class like, wi' the ladies

Changed an impeller on a 4 stroke Tohatsu 8 last week ,inbetween cooking the sunday dinner, lucky i have a celler workshop beneath the kitchen so could keep an eye on things whilst the wife was having a nap ,

Thought that i had better have a look at things seeing as its never been changed in the 6 years that i have had the engine ( only done around 80 hours ),even though it pumped water as good as the day i bought it ,

Having said that i did remove the lower/gearbox bolts and greased them up a couple of years ago to stop them sticking ,

Apart from the usual bits of light corrosion/scale it came apart easy and the impeller looked as good as new with no wear on any of the upper parts or the blade tips but the engine has always been flushed after use in a barrell,
but seeing as its now in bits might as well change it .
had a scrape around with a plastic rod ( dont like scratching the paint off ) clearing out the drain holes that had a bit of silt blocking some of them before putting it back all back together ,
never bother with the special compound but just wiped some waterproof grease on the mating surfaces .

Thanks for the info Willk. Was out on mine yesterday (the 3.4 and 9.8 Tohatsu) but we were struggling at WOT to get the max speed I am sure I have got before (17.5 kts), same loading (very flat sea, no adverse tide/wind) just me and one small child but we were straining to get 15kts...not sure why...

Hi Mart, not sure if it's a fuel issue - bit puzzling really...

Max. I find that once you add a bit of a load things get unpredictable. For us, a bit of a change in wave height or load position can suddenly reduce us to semi-displacement mode, knocking a good 8kts off top. I wonder does it have anything to do with these engines having a relatively small cubic capacity for this HP. I remember the RIBnet rainman saying something to that effect once - less torque maybe, I think...

Anyway, mine is doing what I wanted it to - but I wouldn't put it on a heavier setup.

As I got back to the slip last day (having, um, not spares the horses on the approach ) a WAFI strolled over and announced "That's no way to treat an innocent tender!"
