Is this bad news?
Is this bad news or a kind of locking mechamsim? when pulling the pull start cord it only comes out about 2 inches and appears to
be kind of locked up -I used it 3 weeks ago for a short trip in portsmouth harbour - not for long 30mins running time max, including the
fresh water flush afterwards - any ideas please, i've tried in all gears same result -
Engine, mid eighties blud band mercury 7.5 (long shaft)

its not in gear is it olly?
(edit) I'm a twat and should read posts properly.
It may have a lockout cable to stop you starting it in gear. Check this isn't siezed. If you take the recoil start unit off (3 or 4 bolts-odd yankee sizes) the flywheel will turn by hand if this is the case.
it hasn't been left laid on its left hand side since you last used it has it? If it has then chuck a shedload of WD40 or diesel straight down the plugholes ASAFP and leave it to stand for a few days then try turning it over again. If you leave an engine lying on the same side as the exhaust then water can run back up the exhaust into the cylinders.

What's the condition of the cord like? Could be it's fraid (spelling) and caught up inside.

Cool!
Now run it up in the tank with wayyyy too much redex mixed in the fuel for a while to clear any more crap out of it. A full bottle in a gallon will do it...
