Is this normal? Merc 7.5 lower unit and more ....

Hi
I have woes looming. I went to drain my gear unit and only a cup of water came out. Took off the lower unit and it looks like an old smelly oil bath. The impeller seals etc seem to look ok but as only a drop of water came from the gear box I'm wondering if other factors are in play. Does the exaust come down this far? I bought it as non running project and The engine has not been run for 2 years so I'm told and had a new impeller fitted then. There was multiple salt and corrosion in the carb float chamber etc but that's another tale.

Is this amount of oil and junk within the leg and around the impeller ok? It goes into both gears ok when connected except in forward which rotates as it should but clicks as if a ratchet in reverse of that direction. When in reverse it is engaged both ways as is normal ( I hope).

Also a black plastic guide fell out of the leg too. is this easy to put back?

Any pointers from anyone very welcome to this epic evolving 'WHAT HAVE I Done!' Saga.
I cannot upload pictures for some reason.
Will try with tech help soon.
thanks

You need to google and watch many Youtube videos regarding changing gear oil. The screw at the top is the air vent for changing the lower unit oil. You fill and drain through the bottom flush screw with the upper flush screw removed.

There should be no water "inside" the lower unit. On top of it is fine by the water pump. Also google outboard water pump for your engine.

You NEED a repair manual for your engine too.
