I then bought a new powerhead from Belgium of the Evinrude equivalent from the same year which I thought would fit but there are very minor differences (I'm not an expert on this so this is me paraphrasing my mechanic) which make the pistons in one incompatible with the cylinders in the other (piston rings in the wrong place, etc.) So I now have lots of bits from 2 115 powerheads but need to try and combine into one engine - probably with a rebore and perhaps a new set of pistons. What would the ribnet wisdom be? Should I bother? I've probably put 2k into this so far and have nothing currently to show for it...but don't want to throw good money after bad. Would an engine refurb place be a good bet? Any recommendations? All located west wales but could move it.
Thanks for advice!

I know nothing detailed about this particular engine and any potential incompatibilities between the parts, but by the sounds of it you're paying a mechanic to do all the work? If so, given the likely cost of the additional parts if you're saying it needs at minimum a rebore and new pistons, on top of the labour charges, to my mind it's a very expensive risk to keep throwing money at in the hope you come up with a combination that works. Even if you do get something that works, it will have relatively little resale value given those engines were not much loved anyway even when new.
Unless you have a cheap/free supply of parts and free labour, probably far better to cut your losses, try to sell what you have for parts and put any more money towards a newer/different engine.
