johnson 15hp

Hi all picked up a johnson 15hp year 2000, I have ordered a new thermostat as it was missing could someone tell me which way around it goes in please I have the inner houseing and a large spring inside

Hi Slate,

I don't know these engines that well, but a big spring sounds more like a poppet valve than a thermostat to me......

google "boatinfo.no" - there are a ton of workshop manuals on there.

I don't know this particular engine either but I wonder... by chance has someone removed the thermostat but left the spring part of the stat in place? Normally on other motors the stat return spring is fixed within the stat but if it all came apart due to corrosion perhaps the previous owner pulled all the parts out but thought the spring should stay. Just a long shot??

EDIT: Just looked up a parts diagram and if it's this one it appears the thermostat capsule, spring, etc are all supplied as separate parts... not seen that before.

Thank you both, I have had a look at the parts list I have a thermostat on order from fleebay now I just need diaphragm, and hoping it will get 2 1/2 people on the plane, fingers crossed

Just to follow up fitted the new thermostat all working as it should, its a very small thermostat when i sit it next to one from a 8hp evinrude.
