Johnson 4hp

Hi there

I have an old Johnson 4hp, the throttle cable has broken, see pics. Is this an easy job for me to work out how to do and where would I get a replacement cable?

Thanks!!!Click image for larger version

I have several similar vintage small Evinrude/Johnson engines on our harbour runarounds, and use things like https://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...ion=Tiller+Arm to check the parts diagrams for parts numbers, and then check Ebay/online, and Evinrude dealers. Typically, there seems to be far more available parts for these engines in the US than here, but some people on Ebay break these engines and sell the parts.

Looks like yours needs something like this? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192841491697?ul_noapp=true

I've also had good prices from Wills Marine in Kingsbridge to mail order some Evinrude/Johnson parts to me.

Thanks, yes I have started looking on eBay but no joy yet, new with VAT this part costs £100!!! Crazy price for wire. Will keep an eye out for second hand parts online otherwise may break for parts - shame on an otherwise working engine.

Yeah a dealer told me that today as well, hope I can find the part from someone who is breaking an engine. Does anyone know if it’s just Johnson parts that will fit or would an Evinrude of same hp and age also fit? ...

Agreed, I love my old 2 stroke small outboards, and don't want to change them for a modern 4 stroke for what we use them for. I do my best to keep them running, but the cost of some of the new parts is such that it's just not worth it, so I end up waiting until the right part comes up at the right price.

Check the 4 hp parts with the online diagrams/parts finders, but quite likely to share parts with an Evinrude.

I have a 5 hp Johnson and 9.9 hp Johnson that we use on an aluminium run around, and both share parts with their equivalent vintage Evinrudes. I recently bought a whole lower gear box for the 5hp, and whilst it had a very slightly different shape gear selector rod as it was a different model year, managed to reprofile it to fit. Keep an eye on Ebay and quite possibly the part will turn up soon, or phone a few of the firm breaking this type of engine on Ebay.

So I’ve managed to find a cable from another engine that was being sold as parts, £15 much better than the cost of new parts - £100!!! For a cable!

So now how to fit it, is this relatively straight forward?
