Johnson 4hp - stops after few seconds

Hi all,

Hoping to tap into some of your wisdom and knowledge.

Johnson 4hp has a broken throttle cable, this has now been replaced and the timing plate loosened so it moves as it should.

Now starting it up it starts after a few pulls but stops after a few seconds. I did then notice that the vent on the fuel tank was still closed (oooops!). So going to try again tonight see if after it’s cooled down it starts and keeps running with the vent open. That wouldn’t have helped.

But if that doesn’t do the trick, I’m thinking maybe the carb needs cleaning. Has anyone done this on a Johnson 4hp or similar from the mid 1990s? It’s. 1994 two stroke 4hp engine.

Any guidance most appreciated!!!

Ps I have a video but don’t think I can add it in here?

Johnson 4hp carb clean

These are well known for the carb getting blocked especially if left for long periods. When cleaning pay particular attention to the idle and intermediate drill holes in the bore at the butterfly and of course the float bowl.

You can but it’s temperamental and often doesn’t play well for other people even if you can get it to upload. The easiest solution is to put it on YouTube and link to it here.
