Johnson 5hp not pumping water

So we have a fairly ancient (probably 70/80's vintage) 5hp Johnson outboard on our aluminium SeaNymph to use as a local runabout.

Jumped in it today and started up, and wasn't getting any cooling telltale. As I've done before when this has happened, I pulled the boat out and flushed it through with a hose, to ensure the passageways were clear, and got a lovely strong jet coming out.

But as soon as I start the engine (on the hose), the telltale stops...

Is the impeller knackered?

Thanks,

Paul

It's knackered, worn or probaby have a interior salt obstruction on the crankcase water passages. Run a thin wire up/down inside pee hole while engine is on.

Happy Boating

Brought it home and took the leg apart this evening for the first time. It came apart really rather nicely, and hopefully should all go back together again easily!

Anyway, the rubber impeller vane had separated from it's metal hub, so the drive shaft won't have actually been turning the impeller.

I bet no one will be open in Poole tomorrow who might have one on the shelf, so will probably end up ordering online and fitting next weekend.
