Johnson seahorse impeller

I bought a johnson seahorse 4hp outboard in the winter to use as an auxillary on my sib. Bit of a punt and wasn't surprised when I started it and it failed to pump water. So I opened it up and the impeller is pretty much toast, lost all its vanes. Does anyone know which way round the new impeller should go in? I.e which way should the vanes bend round on themselves. Theres loads of videos of the process but none show which way the vanes should bend within the housing. Hooe to get this baby running by the weekend...

Thanks all

Simon

Try turning the prop in the right direction and seeing which way the shaft turns.

The impeller can only go on one way. On the impeller there should be a slot or channel that engages with the stainless steel woodruff key (semi circular bit). This channel doesn't go all the way through the impeller. The slot should be downward facing so when you slide the impeller on the drive shaft it goes down and over the shaft and locating key and stops just proud of the water pump steel facing plate.

Turn the driveshaft clockwise as you rotate the impeller in the water pump housing. You can lightly grease the impeller so it goes in cleanly.

Cheers all, can't believe I didn't think of spinning the prop!

The engine is getting a complete stripdown and I'm planning on drilling a telltale to the top of the block. Weird that these outboards don't have one.

Not sure what age yours is. I have a fairly old one to use as an aux on my rib. A bit underpowered, but i guess it would be better than nothing! There is a tell-tale, but these engines never pump much water, so don't expect too much!
