Life of an optimax
I'm looking at a boat that has an opti on it which has done about 900 hours, I've heard of these motors doing five times that and seen one with over 3000 but is that common or shall I avoid?
cheers

I've got 750 hours on mine, still going ok. If the air compressor is original then there may not be much life left in it.

How many £££s?

As long as she's been looked after, they can last a very long time.
I'll see how much the compressor would cost you.

When mine failed last year best price I found was from American Marine Imports (Hank), £400-500 iirc.

As Bogib said.
Your better off just getting a new one, for peace of mind and all that.
I wont be able to get you a rough price until the morning !

Complete unit available in USA for around $650-700.
Symptoms include loud rattle or if not running you may find the pulley wobbles around if you take the belt off
It's basically just a little single cylinder engine with crank, rod, piston etc. It's usually the main or big end bearings that fall apart. The frag then finishes off the job!

As Martini said regarding symptoms. Also the engine wouldn't reach max rpm, it'd fall short at about 4500.
After some phoning about the absolute cheapest I can find in the UK is £770.
Good luck fella.

Optimax compressor
Hi, I had one fitted last year it was a complete bummer but luckily the insurance paid up (only after a very worrying time).
Check out this thread
http://rib.net/forum/showthread.php?...max+compressor
There are some really cool people on here who are keen to help and some who are a complete waste of a good pair of underpants- check out thread #15.
In the end I used a local workshop (to me), CTC Marine and Leisure
01642372600 and ask for Lyndsey he is really good, he may be able to source one and send it down to you?
I was up and running within a couple of weeks.
From memory the price was about what you have been quoted.
Good luck
Lee

If you cant take things the way they are meant its not my problem. I felt for you trying to get an engine fixed, but sometimes you have to just take astep back and relax ...........especially if the parts are scarce.
I expect my engine to break at some point & when it does I'll go through the same as you - feel free to post anything you want when this happens.

cheers, read that. Darlington a bit too far from me though as I'm not convinced that's the problem yet and until the engine is in fromt of me I won't know...
Will bear it in mind when the time comes...
