There's no doubt that if you open up the carb and find crud in it, then giving it a good clean is a sensible thing to do.

are correct, and the mystery tube IS to provide crankcase impulse pressure for the fuel pump, and IF you are right in saying that you think the tube was not attached to anything,

Thanks for your input! Agreed that it could have been an easily overlooked vital part, but after stripping the carb, it seems to be just a breather/ overflow in the top of the float chamber

Well that's interesting. Thanks for getting back with that information.

Have you had a chance to try the motor again since you cleaned the carb?
