Mariner 15hp 2 stroke no tell tail

I bought a Mariner 15hp 2 stroke 2012 last week , guy showed me it running and there was a tell tail , not gushing but constant,
I had it out on Loch Lomond on Sunday and the tell tail was the same , but the engine cut out a couple of times on tick over,
I was going to check the carb settings today so put the engine into a bucket of water ,
There was no tell tail , there was some hot vapour coming out so shut off the engine ,
Any ideas guys .

Unknown condition of water impeller means change it. You can tear it down in a few minutes to inspect it at the least. Watch a few Youtube videos and follow the one that seems to actually know what they are doing.

By stalling on tick over do you mean it kinda started then died? Not a huge surprise on a small motor.

RIBase
Watch videos from Stu at Dangar Marine. I’d buy an impeller anyway for peace of mind. Check the condition of the water pump housing and gaskets, etc.

If the impeller did come apart, make sure to find every piece, or an errant piece could plug the tell tale.

I have been watching how to change the impeller and water pump , I will have a look at the condition at the weekend, will also inspect the thermostat, I think there’s a tell tail down near the cavitation plate , I couldn’t see anything there as I had it under water in the bucket, about cutting out , I was motoring for 5 minutes then stopped to talk to my mate on his boat with the engine ticking over and it cut out , it did this 3 times when out that day , the rest of the day was fine ,

Where was the vapour coming out? Somewhere at the back of the top of the leg?

My 1970s 20 and my late 80s 5HP both have no real telltale at idle, but spray water out a small vent at the top of the back of the exhaust, moist comes out as steam due to the heat of the exhaust. The 5Hp has what I might loosley describe as a steady drip, but it properly squirts when running.

you are now making me wonder if I need to change the impeleer on the 5, as I just assumed it was what you might call a "'Rude family trait"!
