Mariner 3.3hp 2 stroke tiller

Just fitting a new tiller to this engine.
It's the model that the tiller is for steering only, no twist throttle.
Anyway, no matter what I've tried (washers, split washers etc) every time I tighten it, the bolt always comes undone by lifting the tiller up and down.
The bolt goes through the tiller and into a pre threaded plate. There is no nut on the back.
Any advice??

Can you put a nut on the back? If so use a Nylock. Otherwise threadlocker like Loctite 271 will fix it right up.

Have you got the correct bolt? Shouldn't the bolt have a shoulder to bottom out whilst leaving the handle free to move or possibly stepped/sprung washers required. Its unlikely to be just a plain bolt for that type of application

I've used the original bolt that came off.

threadlock should work - just choose the strength you fancy - some are neat permanent, others less so.
