Mariner 40 Marathon

Does anyone know what this engine is? Any special qualities? 2 or 4 stroke?

I may be wrong here but I understand it to be either:

A late 80's 2 cylinder 2 stroke twin carb 40 built in conjunction with Yamaha -as used by the RNLI.

OR
An early 90's 4 cylinder 2 stroke built to be really smooth although this could be called a magnum?

I pretty sure it is the former but hopefully this will jog someones memory! I think the person to ask is Tue.

Oh dear, I was just looking on Boats and outboards Mariner marathon

And that engine doesnt look from the 80's (crap photo though). There is an a mariner engine called a marathon but I reckon the flames have been stuck on as an after thought. Its pretty basic for a newish (40 manual start manual tilt).

You can buy them new, its just a beefed up version of the range. Better Cotrol cables, gear levers etc. There usually sold to third world countries. I think we do a marathon version of most two stroke engines up to 90hp. But the 90/75 and 60hp all have tiller arms and i think from memory manual start!.
