Mariner 50 neutral selection

I have a Mariner 50 4-stroke, with a Mercury throttle controller, and it works fine except for when I move, from forwards, to neutral there is a sound of rubbing gears. If I slightly move it into reverse and back to neutral, then the noise stops.
Does it need adjusting, and if so which cable, it which direction ?
or is it just sticky cables ?

Thanks Fred, I'll have a go at adjusting it.

Do you mean the inner has to longer or the outer ?
