Mariner 55EL Gear Rod troubles

Hi

I have a mariner (yamaha) 55 EL (1987) outboard. For some reason the gear selector seems to not been in the right place, ie when its in neutral, its too far accross the slider. This engine has the twist type gear rod, not the up and down type. I need to know 2 things, 1) How do I remove the lower unit as there does not appear to be a linkage turnbuckle halfway down the rod, and 2) can the position of the gears be F N R be changed accidentally by the previous owner???
