Mariner 60HP 2 stroke engine problem!

Hi guys.

On our boat (sorry not a RIB but still has an engine that has a problem lol) we have a 60HP Mariner 2 stroke engine.

We put the engine in a bucket and on muffs and she starts on the turn of the key instantly and runs beautifully. You can rev her, engage gear, put her on full throttle all day without the slightest hint of a problem.

As soon as we lauch her, the engine will take a fair few turns to start up and then, when going, she will only go around 6/7 knots and she should be doing at least 25 or maybe more (guess but it is a planing profile hull and she should go pretty quick).

We have had a chap called Chris who is a genious with engine look at it and he says it could be that the high stata isn't working (spelling) or one of the reed blocks (spelling) is sticking.

The 2nd engineer for one of the lifeboats on Anglesey (he works at Dulas Powerboats) says that it is probably the high stata too.

Neither are 100% sure though.

Could it be something they are missing at all?

Chris has opened up the carburettes (spelling) and blasted them out and cleaned them and that still hasn't done the trick.

Thanks in anticipation,

Ed

Sounds to me like the advance and retard arm has come off sometimes the plastic clip holding it can break...I'd check this before spending money..

Thanks for the reply.

I have forwarded it to our mechanic, Chris, as it means nothing to me.

Will let you know if it helps.

Cheers,

Ed

Hi
I had similar symtoms and it turned out to be nothing more than a failed plug cap. Check them for a tight fit and no rust inside.

If the high speed Stator has failed it will misfire rather than not go quickly. Does the engine reach full Rpm? If its a Reed valve it will be making a different noise when running, you would probably hear it.
What does the engine do when you put it at 100% throttle?

On full throttle it sounds about 1/3 revs if that makes sense when pushing the boat. When on muffs and not trying to push the boat through the water, it will go to full revs or as near as.

The engine doesn't misfire at all, either on the water or on the muffs.

It is pretty weird.

I do not think it is the caps. We have changed the plugs for new ones and put the old ones back in to try them and still no joy.

Am still waiting to hear back about the retard arm idea.

Thanks for all the help so far!

This is the response from our mechanic, Chris, about the advance/retard arm theory.

"Makes sense to me and it is one of the things I checked The engine wouldn't rev in a tank if it had come off.

There are only 2 things now high speed stator or reed blocks, at a guess reed blocks if it was the stator the engine wouldn't surge like it is.

Repeated the diesel treatment on it, needs to go on the water to test it."
