Mariner 8HP mystery electrical connection

Hi guys, I'm new here so I don't know if this thread is in the right place.

I'm new to the SIBing scene and I've started with a Wetline 450HD and a Mariner 8HP outboard (I don't know the year). But there's a connection next to the choke and fuel connector that has 2 prongs (see pictures). I've traced the connections (one red and one black) to a black box with two other yellow connections on it. Apologies for the picture orientation. Any ideas on what this connection is for?

My best guess is that it is a battery charging socket, and the unit on the engine is a rectifier?

But not 100%.
