Merc 15hp 2 Stroke Not Idling

Hi all

Got an issue with my 2006 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke. Recently fitted a tiny tach to check prop pitch & record hours and noticed it was idling very fast (1500rpm). It tops out at 5850 on a run so I am pretty confident the tach is on the right setting. If I try to slow down the idle with the screw on the throttle cam then it will start to stall.

My thinking is that the idle jet/passages are clogged so whoever owned it before just whacked the idle speed up to engage the main jet. Does this sound right? If so then just a carb clean required?

Anyone with experience of these know the minimum number of gaskets needed when removing the carb to clean? Have seen rebuild kits online at £70+ but seems to contain far more parts that I would have thought were needed.

Hi.

I had a similar issue with my 2004 Mercury 15hp 2 stroke. Would not idle correctly. I ended up fitting the carb repair kit and it did sort the issue.

There are two kits available the repair kit and the gasket kit. The attached photos show what comes in each kit.

I also found that the previous owner had put the wire link for the fast idle knob in the wrong place meaning it would not work correctly.

Item 29 is a ball and spring, the ball is easy to loose, result running very rich. A good clean and set it as per servos manual should be OK.

Funnily enough this was missing on mine but couldn’t say for sure if I lost it! Don’t think I did but certainly was giving me similar symptoms [emoji106]

I used to take the ball bearing out, as a fault for the people to find on some service courses.

If they couldn't take a joke they shouldn't have joined. Most took it in the spirit it was meant for, ie learning. As I have been retarded, sorry retired nearly six years I don't mind giving a few secrets away.

Thanks all for the advice. Looks like a full rebuild kit is practically the same price as the gasket kit so will just get that. Xmas tinkering time sorted.
