Merc Verado Repair possible?

I know it is incongruous but I am into RIBs and poor and live in the USA no less. So I am always looking for a bargain. I saw this on flea-bay, 2007 Mercury 275 HP Verado 4 Stroke Outboard Motor Fresh Water Needs Work | eBay

A 5 year old verado 275 with 844 hours and a messed up valve/head. Any idea what kind of cost might be involved in repairing it? I am a DIY type of guy but didn't know if parts and such were available outside of the authorized dealer network. I've rebuilt my share of car engines so tearing one apart and putting it back doesn't really scare me.

The auction is over so this is almost just an educational question but there is always a chance....

Stupid never takes a break.

Thanks,
Jason

Well, I know squat about motors, but I think you might have dodged a bullet there!

From what I can see, it's a "counter-rotating" unit - read this thread:

I think the standard rotation ones are just as bad. One company I do some work for had one go bang after about 200 hours.

Wow, just clicked the link. For that price if I had the knowledge and was local I think I would have taken a punt. If all else fails you have a nice ornament for your house.
