Mercruiser 1.7 220hp Possible Replacement

Hi there,

I am the part owner of a Prosport 6.5 with Mercruiser 1.7 220hp inboard engine which is currently broken! Overall I love the boat, great handling and in boat terms, very frugal. However at the moment it is dead in the water, overheated due to blocked water intake and requires a full rebuild which as you can imagine is not cheap.

This brought up the possibility of just putting a new engine in, the obvious direct replacement is the Mercruiser 2.0l so we goy a quote, £18k

This is definitely a bit pricy, have had a quick look 2nd hand but doesn't seem to be much out there. So my question is have I missed a more cost effective option for a new engine or does anyone know of any good second hand engines that might be suitable?

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Those 1.7 120hp engines had a poor life expectancy in ribs & there is little benefit now in spending big money to replace it with another diesel.
Imho your best option is sell the current engine and drive as a project, fit an outboard and have a lighter faster and roomier boat.
I'm not a diesel boat hater (I own one) but nowadays they dont make much sense in a small ish rib

We have a yanmar 4jh4-hte for sale at the min. It’s 135hp 2.0ltr it that would go on your drive.
It’s got very low hours and would be a fairly easy swap. It’s on e bay if your interested.

You’ll probably find that as that 1.7 is one of the most compact units ever the engine bay may not accommodate anything else. Beamishkens advice is likely your best option as you’ll improve your power to weight, gain a lot of room and get ahead of the declining attractiveness of diesel for leisure since the law on and availability of duty free or agri diesel tightened considerably.

If in your search you come across West End Marine, the general advice is keep searching.

It would be a bit of a mission but if you have the ancilliaries, could you get a car / van engine and use that?

I don't suppose the Mercruiser 1.7 could be the same block as a Vauxhall 1.7?
