Mercury 150 4 stroke Warranty

Hi

I have a RIB with Mercury 150 4 stroke engine.

Dealer is adamant that a 3mth/20hr service is mandatory to keep the warranty.

Yet the documentation that came with the engine states that this services is recommended, but mandates annual servicing.

What are the views on here?

I believe the engine has a standard 3 year warranty regardless of whether its serviced etc, but to achieve the 5 year warranty you need to get it serviced at the set intervals by a main dealer.

I would get it serviced/checked over if shouldnt cost much as there is not much involved in a 20hr service but its a good idea to have a dealer check over it.

It is who your dealer got the engine from in first place. They will ultimately decide your warranty so ask them.

Extract from P2 of the Outboard Logbook (EMEA):

"The recommended service intervals and maintenance recommendations must be adhered to 12mth, 2yr, 3yr, 4yr, 5yr, or 100hrs, 200hrs, 300hrs, 400hrs, 500hrs, 600hrs...; whatever comes first".

Of note, in the above, there is no mention of the 3mth / 20hr service the supplying dealer is telling me is mandatory. So with that, why the feck should I pay £250 for something that is clearly not necessary?

250 quid for a 20hr service.....you need a new dealer.

However, advice is still same....Barrus will confirm if your dealer is at it.

Barrus are the UK distributor as far as I can tell, but the European importer is Brunswick Marine in Belgium. I would have thought that warranty policy is set by Brunswick seeing as they author the documentation.

Regardless, I will give Barrus a call to see what they have to say.

Brunswick | About us

(Brunswick is the owner of Mercury)

If you need warranty work your dealer asks Barrus, they may in turn ask Bruswick who may ask mercury depending on the origins of the engine these days. It is of no importance to your question though.

I suspect your dealer is mistaken on the 20 hour, although it is not unheard of to have one.

Thought all work / warranty requests were logged / authorised on Mercury web portal?

I've only had 1 warranty issue with my old mariner 4 stroke and dealer called Barrus on it when i was standing there. What happens now to get bits I don't know, maybe someone else does and can confirm for you.

I had to get my 6hp Mercury serviced at three months....it had ran for about 30 seconds and never been put in gear. To be fair Clyde Outboards only charged me £40 for that service.
Regarding the five year extended warranty I've done the arithmetic and I'm guessing a 6hp aux outboard that gets less than two hours running a year is not going to run up a repair bill that'll be more than the dealer servicing costs so I'll just be doing it myself.

I don't believe the 20 hr service is mandatory on the new 150 4S - though it was on my old Optimax. It is worth double checking though as the 5 year warranty is excellent and Barrus certainly honour it fully. Over the first 5 years of use, I had a number of warranty claims (some down to my OCD/pernicketiness, and great dealer support)

That said, I have opted to have the 3 month 20 hr service done and it has been registered on the Mercury website. The 'service' was a gear oil, engine oil and filter change, as well as removing the gearbox, water pump bolts etc to clean up to remove any trace of factory loctite, and grease on re-assembly - which definitely makes future maintenance much easier.

£250 sounds expensive !

,,, yes, I could easily have done these things myself but ....

if you get onto brunswick to ask them they will refer your question to barrus. If it hasnt changed they will say it is a check adjustments make sure nothing is falling of and change the gear oil.Barrus are the distributors of merc/mar for the UK and Ireland.

Dealer servicing is stupid expensive for what it is. I had the dealer do my F-115 for the first service; lube oil, filter, spark plug check and LU oil was something around $400.

Don't know about your side of the pond, but here (US), you can maintain warranty as long as the work is done (doesn't matter by who.)

Correct, hence the 3 year standard warranty and the extra 2 year 'extended' warranty. To achieve the extended warranty the servicing has to be logged onto brunswicks dealer system by an authorised dealer.

That is not what the warranty documentation says. The only warranty period that is mentioned is 5yrs.

I think this is absolutely correct and was with my old Optimax - and I cannot see anything to suggest it is different on the new 4S. My Operations/Maint/Warranty Installation manual on P17 does state 3 years standard - and I am sure that the plus 2 applicable to the UK does require dealer maintenance

I would definitely clarify with Barrus but your dealer should know
