I think you need to ask the company doing the repair that question as they have presumably dismantled and inspected it. And ask them what happens if it doesn't run properly after the repair is completed.

I suspect the repair shop will want payment before you take it away so you may only get to see it running in a drum or on muffs. What happens if it does not run correctly at WOT, or destroys itself again on the first outing? Unless you know why it overheated the first time you cannot be sure you have fixed that problem so it will not do it again.

What Chris said above.
Luke, do you know about running in a motor?
You'll need to run it in for a while after a major rebuild like that.

Luke, I agree with what others have posted regarding your taking a chance having the motor rebuilt, but as you seem to be on a very tight budget, it looks like you are in that place we have been at some point, a rock and a hard place! if it were me, I would just be very upfront with Shrewsbury Marine, who have always seemed like a reasonable bunch to me when I have visited, just tell them your position and that you cannot afford to pay for the repairs and then find you still have a broken motor, ask for some assurance that they will test the motor properly, they have access to the river on their doorstep so no reason why they cant prove the motor before you pay up. If they can't give you that assurance, then I'd look elsewhere for someone to do the rebuild that can give you that assurance

luke don't forget those prices are probably ex VAT.
You'll also need a new impeller etc - if its not been replaced as the old one is mashed. If you end up paying less that £500 you've been pretty "lucky".

I would if I were you! I guess you aint got a bottomless pit of money, so if don't work when it's rebuilt you need to have some comeback with whoever is doing the work. if you can get them to agree to a warranty on the work done and proof the engines works under load, preferably on your boat on the river right next to their workshop, then that's probably as best you can do. They have always seemd a decent bunch in there when I bought bits from them, but there again I wasn't in your position!
good luck!!

probably not as much as it will owe you, but seems you are between a rock n a hard place, it's either bite the bullet n get it repaired, or sell it for spares n start again
