Mercury 90 ELPT Oil Tank Leak.

I have a 1998 Mercury 90 ELPT 2 stroke, the oil tank for the autolube is an integral part of the engine. The tank has the filler neck and cap as it should but also there is a small open hole at the top of the tank at the back of the engine. I think when I filled the tank up and trailed it to the water with the engine tilted oil must have leaked out as around the oil tank, inside the cowling and around the transom of the boat is now very oily. Should there ba some sort of pipe etc fitted in this hole or should it be blocked off. Surely the tank needs some sort of vent to atmosphere though??

Sorry don't know how to add pictures.

Just had a look on Ribs Marine Parts diagram for my engine. It seems I am missing part no's 19299A1 - Vent Assembly
and 21-64871 - Valve

Odd that these items are missing... Are they required or can I make up a 1 way valve to stick in the hole as a repalcement?

Yes you need the check valve, it stops the water coming in but lets the air into the tank as you use up the oil. The check valve is £8.22 with your discount and the vent is £10.00. Not cheap but you need them, both the check valve wont stay in if you dont have the vent assembly.

Mercury oil tank leak

For a solution to the oil leak problem with Mercury outboard 2 strokes - go to www.ebay.com and type in "Merc BUDDY". Also you can go to www.robbco-llc.com for more info on this solution.
