Mercury Mariner or Mariner EFI?!

Sorry it may be a stupid question, but what is the difference in terms of performance between these two:

MERCURY MARINER F 50 HP Outboard Motor Engine F50 ELPT | eBay UK

or

NEW Mariner 50hp F50 EFI Electric Start Outboard | eBay UK

???

Both 50hp, both four stroke,....

It's time for changing my outboard as it has been running for the past 10 years (the first series of Yamaha 4 strokes! so was looking around and Mercury/Mariner are the cheapest 4 strokes in the market...

Try looking for best value, not cheapest

Agree! but what is the value of going for EFI or the other one?!

Uncle Al mentioned a few benefits...I am not even sure if Mercury/Mariner is a good option for me.

I owned this Yamaha 60hp since 2001 and it has been a lovely engine. NEVER let me down, never needed major repair, worked like a horse! but I have noticed that it is making a few noises in the gearbox, and that puts me off, especially as we go on the rib quite long hours and sometimes far.

So time for new outboard! Advice please!!!

Both engines are EFI, and are both made by the same people (Mercury & Mariner are the same engine, just different colours)

Both engines say they are brand new, and if they are then they will be identical.

If the engine you get is what the picture is depicting, then the only difference will be the shape really. (unless the new model (2nd link) had some other updates to it.)

The EFi versions have been around for a long time now, so I expect the motor sold by Barnet Marine is also an EFi version, although not stated in the listing.

I agree if it was a newish engine or if I was going to just sell it or if I had enough time!

This engine has over 3000hrs on it now, so I expect that from now on, so many things start going wrong! This could be a sold as spare or repair or to someone who does not mind spending time under the hood!

Reparing a gearbox will cost me around £1k, or if buy a new gearbox it will be the same.

If I end up having 2-3 major repair in the next 4 years, I better spend that money now on a brand new engine with warranty.

I am also considering other brands, Yamaha and Honda are my other two options. I am a bit reluctant to buy a 2011 yamaha as I have heard the new engines are not as good as what I bought in 2001....

Get a price from Black Dog Marine before you buy a brand new merc/mariner would be my advice, 10% off for Ribnetters

30 mins use one not worth the discount on it compared to new. In for a penny and all that. Go for the new one, looks better anyway.

After 3000 hours a gearbox rebuild is the least your motor deserves. Served you well
