Hehe, well maybe not, are you familiar with Codprawn?
Ta for the link Poly.
But he may have a point, these engines are sold all around the world and I can't see DFI oil being available in a chandlers up the Amazon Delta...

Well he used to bang on about rock oil, given they have developed a special dfi oil I'd say "normal" tcw3 no, I'm using their dfi in an optimax and so far all is well [emoji1][emoji106]

Just an observation - Etecs could be set up to run on XD50(i.e. TCW-3) - despite Evinrude pimping their high cost XD-100. Once in XD50 mode they used more oil but there were no issues. I wonder do Optimax have a similar ECU option?

I don't believe so. Unless it's a factory option we in the west don't know about.

Yes, you can.
This from page 22 of the 135/150/175 Optimax User guide:
Oil Recommendation
Recommended Oil Optimax/DFI 2-Cycle Engine Oil
Mercury or Quicksilver Optimax/DFI 2-Cycle Engine Oil is recommended for your engine. If Optimax/DFI 2-Cycle
engine oil is not available, we recommend using Mercury or Quicksilver TC-W3 Premium Plus 2-Cycle Oil. Severe
engine damage may result from use of an inferior oil.

Note - Premium Plus not Premium >
Personally, having had Opti motors for 15 years, I have always run DFI - yes it may be marketing hype but for me its worth the 'insurance'. Carbon build up is the devil of DFI motors
Quicksilver Premium Plus TC-W3 2-Stroke Oil 4Ltr - An advanced Premium Plus blend oil formulated for 2-cycle outboard engines. It contains extra dispersants & detergents to give the best possible protection against the adverse effects of low quality fuel. Improves engine efficiency, fights corrosion, extends spark plug life & burns cleaner as well as protecting against carbon & harmful deposits. Will also give added engine protection in extreme conditions.
Quicksilver TC-W3 2-Stroke Oil 4Ltr - A premium oil for 2-cycle outboard engines providing superior high temperature cleanliness & all round protection from corrosion.
• TC-W3

using the Mercury premium plus will be fine on an Opti . The dfi oil is of course better. As long as you stay away from the cheap low grade tcw3 there should be no issue. Some oils do not mix well together so it's always better to use one brand and stay with it.

JW - are you looking at replacing the Humber? Should local tractor owners be warned to lock their cabs away?

Some folks are very cheeky! No, the Humber is staying, I'm considering a second boat as more of a play boat. Diesel preferred, but keeping options open and gathering info. I have a lot of tcw3 left from the old days and I doubt I'll use it all up with my chainsaw! So was wondering about the possibility of using it in an opti should I end up with one. The thought of the inconvenience of a petrol boat isn't too appealing though.

Shame, I was hoping there was going to be a bargain cabin humber coming up for sale! How much TCW3 have you got that it is enough to influence the engine choice?

Way off, man, way off... A few years ago I got a very good deal on a 205ltr drum... I've still got enough that I'll likely never need to buy more!

Men have shouted "Freedom!" with less oil than that at stake. An opti suddenly makes a lot of sense. Does it have a sell by date?
