Mercury Optimax 250 how much oil use???
Hi
I am about to put my money down on a rib, however the one thing in the back of my mind is it is a 2-stroke 250 optimax, will I be broke fRom buying oil?
anyone out there running one, how much do you burn per 100 litres of petrol or which oil are you using, the dealer recommended is €67 a gallon, the other side to this is if I am burning it, I am getting out on the water, it is on teh back of a 6.8 cobra.
Thanks

Just use the recommended DFI oil. You can get it for a lot less than £67. I've burnt about 4 litres since the round island on about 120-150 litres of fuel.

In the grand scheme of running and owning a rib, it's a nothing thing. I had a 150 Opti previously, a run to the Scillies (200Nm) would use a can of DFI oil (£16), a round of Doom Bar would cost me £20+, a round of coffees and muffins £58.
In short, if £16 is going to be a deal breaker on a stunning trip for your family/friends, maybe ribbing is not for you.

^wot e said. We did around 400 miles at Oban, I used 2 cans of XD100, about £90, add that to the cost of boat fuel, accommodation, diesel, food, worth every penny and some.

Thanks for replies , agree about the cost being minimum in the run of things , just wanted an idea of what to expect, it would be my intention to buy the oil in bulk, cheers for all the answers

Been using this stuff in my 200 Opti for the past couple of years.
Reckon 60:1 is a pretty good average consumption.

Best to use only the quicksilver dfi oil. You can buy it in 10l containers for bout 80 quid bout the same price as 2 4l ones.

Not sure wether the extra 100hp makes a difference. Also I think the 150 is 2.5 litre block and the 175-250 uses the 3 litre lump not sure though.

Depends how you drive.
I've heard that every time you open the throttle it injects a little more on top of the steady state ammount.
So, if you work the throttle a lot you'll use a lot of oil.

50% of my running was trolling across the channel at 800 rpm for hours on end. Used 100 litres of oil during the 175 hours. That's why with those figures I now run the 150 merc four strokes. Miss the opti growl though

Summat not right there. Don't know about Optis, but Etecs use next to buggerall when trolling, as Searider says, the faster & harder you drive 'em the more oil they use.

Had an opti have an Etec. The opti burnt a touch more, but nothing to fret about.

My optis run on about 35:1 fuel/oil when cruising around 4000/4500 rpm.
I had a breakdown last year, did the 25nm trip home on one motor, that motor consumed about the same amount of oil as the 2 motors would do normally
