Mercury Sloppy throttle

My Mercury throttle has a lot of play in it, all directions and seems just generally very loose. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Ollie

Start at the engine is there play in the throttle cables. Work back from there to the box.

There's a white nylon ring inside the throttle assembly (assuming it's one of the externally mounted ones). They get damaged over time. Mine had to be replaced and all the sloppiness was gone.
Beyond checking the cables are attached correctly it struck me as being like taking a clock apart so I let someone who knew what they were doing fix it.
