Mercury smartcraft speed
Does the system come with a paddlewheel or pitot tube to get speed? Or is it best to wire in a GPS to it?

It should have a pitot, but I wired mine straight to GPS. It's easier.
If you search back to my Smartcraft loom thread, you'll find the colour codes for the NMEA0183 cables from them.

I connected mine to the GPS, the needle doesn't work but you get the speed and cog on the display.

That's a fault with your gauge then if you've set the mode. My needle works.

Interesting, must admit I never really played with it - got a Yamaha now and annoying digital displays instead if dials

Theres a pitot tube as standard on the outboard, the smart craft has its own transom mounted paddlewheel with temp sensor. Theres also a pair of 0183 wires off the can bus harness for gps input.
I could be getting confused with something else but I'm sure the smartcraft takes speed from the paddlewheel up to a user defined point then switches over to the gps for higher speeds.
Edit: just read your question again, it doesnt come with the paddlewheel, its a separate Airmar unit, the "boat" harness is separate as well.

Depends where you tell it to take it from-mine's been told to take it from GPS only.

Yeah your right, paddle wheel just does low speed and then switched over to at a set speed.

Ok...so if there is a pitot as standard on the outboard the thing to do is to wire that up into the smartcraft, along with GPS input so that it switches from using the pitot at slow speed to GPS at high speed...or is it only possible to have that switch if you use the paddlewheel? Bearing in mind it may come with a paddlewheel I haven't actually asked.
