Mercury/tahatsu 2.5 gear
Was given for free a abandoned, stuck merc 2.5 hp outboard. And stuck it was..noted that gear oil plug was missing.... no wonder. Dropped the leg, flushed tank with new gas, run trough fresh fuel through the carb and sprayed lube trough spark plug hole. On third pull it started, after that on first. Not bad after spending years in a cold shed, did not even change the plug.
But the internal parts of gear housing was bad, ful of crap and rust and stuck. Not worth to spend much cash or time to repair but if get cheap parts or a complete gearhouse, why not.
Think drive shaft and propeller shaft are ok. But ball bearings, and most likely also bevel gear and pinion gear are shot. Looks little better and somehow moves after rough cleaning but still...
Question, need to get the pinion gear out to dismantle the internal parts. Removed the( remainings of)snap ring that keep it in place, but still can not move/lift the drive shaft ?
Should it move freely after removing the snap ring or is there something else that keeps it in place?
Thanks
