Mercury Throttle Linkage Problem

We have a problem with the throttle/gear linkage on a Mercury 60 EFI.

It started out moving freely in reverse but would not go in to forward and neutral was slightly in gear, I spend ages adjusting the gear cable in the engine and managed to get neutral, just, the button clicks out on the leaver and you have to wiggle it to get it out of gear - not ideal.

The gear lever in the engine moves freely and with the gear cable disconnected the throttle lever moves freely too, but connect the gear cable back up and it's a s stiff as anything.

I've spent ages adjusting at the engine end but do I need to take the throttle control box off and adjust it that end - It's a real pain to get to which is why I've not tried it yet - of is it just a turn at a time on the gear cable.

So the shift cable is sticking in the jacket? Sounds like it's time to replace (I don't think you can really clean it out and lube it up.)

FWIW, a buddy just replaced his steering cables (same motor as you); was amazed at the difference.

No, both cables are perfect and it runs very easily in reverse, just stiff going forward - I'm guessing the problem is in the lever - which will take a few weeks to fix as I'll have do diet like Winnie the poo to squeeze in to reach it

Sounds like the control box if you think everything else is working ok.

Found the problem, the gear box had been put on wrong, by a well known place down here, quite common apparently as Mercurys are a bid different, there are a different amount of splines for forward and reverse and if not lined up properly it doesn't work.
