If your not aware they are a family firm that sell hand built engines assembled by mechanics with oilly rags. Best to phone them, after you have joined the owners club for the discount.

Didn't know that either.
I used to use a Starfish 34 with a Mermaid & shaft drive. One of the most reliable engines i have ever used in a marine enviroment.

Mermaid are great - most of the older ones based on British built ford lorry engines. The newer engines are again Ford and JCB.

Nice boat, what made you get a RIB?

They're great pair of engines. Will try and get some photos' next time I'm up there as you wouldn't believe how mint they are. Because my parents live aboard my dad spends most of his time down sat in between them even though they don't need anything doing to them.
Time for a service now though. Tough on the old wallet!

I've dealt with Mermaid on a number of occasions because one of the company launches has two Majestic 6cyl diesels fitted, very helpful bunch of people, usually no problem with answering emails so sounds odd.

i take it that they are indirect cooled, take the brass plate off the front of the water pump and i think you'll find that it will be a jabsco pump and it should have a number on the plate, any good chandler should be able to help with the numbers you can provide

Yep, I also think they're Jabsco/compatible. Just about to pull a 25 yr old mermaid dover out of my parents boat to replace it with something a little more modern, frugal and quieter. We've had enough of thinking were sitting on a london bus when it's running!

Got the original part number for the impellers. Got a price for aftermarket ones £25 each + P&P. Heard back from Mermaid today, £17 + P&P and they come with the paper gasket too.

I have to disagree on that Erin as these are very smooth. Although they where new in 2001 and have done very little hours in that time.

Yeah, we've got something like 2,500 hrs on ours and 5,700 miles, so I think they're well past the run-in state and somewhere nearer re-build. History is a little unknown. It may not have been cared for properly in formative years.
Hmmm, just calculated that out and it means average speed is only 2.3kts. Seems a bit low, or else someone left the engine idling for about 2 months!
