My outboard won't start

Washed RIb, did all the little jobs i'd promised to do over the winter, recovered the seats, fited that wee bilge pump I bought last summer, all sorted!

Saved the best for last!

Fresh fuel, all primed, turned key!

Starter kicked in, over and over and over.

No life!

Nothing that sounds like a spark!

Now battery pretty flat and starter red hot!

Mariner 90hp

Any thoughts guys?

Pulled then HT leads off, cleaned them.

Unscrewed the plugs, cleaned them.

Put it all back together.

No change!

Is the fuel tank vent open ? go check it again, ive spent hours only to find it such
a simple mistake. ( but didnt tell her indoors or she would laugh too much)

Is there any fuel at the engine end ? if not mght be trapped air in fuel line.

Did you oil up the pistons went to last pout it away to save corrosion ?

Was the carb empty when last used ? could be well full of varnish if not.
Nowdays petrol starts to go funny after just 6 weeks if left standing still !!!

does that not disengage the starter rather than short the spark? i.e. it won't turnover

Slow down. Start with the basics.

Sparks, fuel, compression.

Wil go through the basics again.

Assume to check for a spark I neet to remove a plug, reattach the HT lead and hold the business end against the head!?

Kill switch in place.

Will check the vent isn't stuck shut on tank.

Hand cranked fly wheel a half dozen times to ensure there was fuel/oil around the head before starting, no seize issues, turning fine.

Not sure how i check to see if their is old fuel still in the system!

At least it is a lovely day here is Scotia!

Firth of Forth is like a mill pond!

Need to get out there!!!!!

Drain the carbs and with the drain open (and something to catch the fuel that's peeing out) pump a bit through to clear the fuel line of old fuel.

Can see the 3 carbs but no idea where the drain plugs are!

Manual doesn't help much there either!

On the floatbowls-should be on the same side as the throttle linkage.

See a few little screws. Is it one of them?

Horrible feeling that it's the fuel pump that's away!

Drained the middle carb. Fuel poured out. Reprimed and heard fresh stuff going in.

Tried to start and got a back fire pop. First indication of a spark i've had so far!

The bottom carb is pretty hard to reach and the op carb drain screw isn't a screw!!!???

One thing for sure if I drop any of those screw into the engine space, I won't see them again!

What's your thoughts now?

Checked that and it looks whole.

Will check it again though!

Cheers.

Think it is just old fuel lying in carbs.

Cannot get into two of them and just draining the one doesn't seem to do it!

Plenty compression, sparking fine.

Put wee drop of petrol in each plug socket and recleaned the plugs.

Still nothing!

Don't get this!

It's not a Mariner 4 stroke is it ?

I had to scrap one with 25 hours on it, it never ran reliably even after expensive visits to the dealers.
