New engine block for Johnson 115
Hi all, after your wisdom. My (new to me last year) Johnson 115 from 2001 died this summer...a couple of the pistons seized and the crank bearings went. I don't really understand these things but someone I trust tells me that it needs a new whole engine block. I can find one in Holland for £500...but that would need shipping.
What's the wisdom of the group:
a) Is it worth repairing or should I ditch and start again? Strikes me that I've essentially got a worthless engine currently and it'll almost certainly be worth what I pay to repair if I were to decide to sell?
b) Any bright ideas on getting an engine block from Holland without breaking the bank?!
c) Any cheaper sources of engine blocks?
Thanks!

I’m inclined to agree. If you were handy with the spanners & had the knowledge to do the job yourself, then it might be just feasible. But as you say “you don’t really understand these things”, then you’re going to pay labour on top of any bits that you source. Presumably, you don’t know the history of the Dutch block, so you could be buying another world of hurt. Your dead engine will have some value in the lower unit/electrics/transom bracket etc. I’d bite the bullet & buy a replacement engine tbh.

I've had stuff shipped from Holland & it wasn't to bad cost wise just google freight forwarders or European shipping only problem is you'll pay vat & duty on the price nowadays. Or have a long weekend away & throw it in the boot on your way back to the ferry. Didnt cost too much last time I took a pickup over your past the expensive time of year.
I understand the scrap it comments as the engine is relatively low value but running probably still £1500+ so if you can fix it for little over £500 then still worthwhile. Thats assuming the block your buying is 100% & your doing the work yourself. If your paying labour then id forgot it

I've got a Johnson 150 hp outboard complete if that's of any interest? It's had the same owner from new until I bought it complete on a rib we have re powered, it's inside the shed currently

This! Or just repower with something newer.
I'd use whiskylee's engine (assuming a preice coule be agreed) and then strip the old one, keeping useful bits for spares (gearboxes, coils, stators, starters and more). But then I am handy with spanners.....

This is assuming the OP’s boat can take a 150. His current engine is a 115, not the same block afaik.
