Wee update.
Lower unit pressure tested today. Deffo 1 of the upper seals slightly leaking so the gear oil is going into exhaust chamber. But it's not as bad as I first thought . Oil goes a long way so it seemed like a lot. Engine booked in for next week. Guy reckons it's an hour's work . So not fatal. Happy once again.

From what I've been told true or not I'm not sure, but they're is an oil seal and also a
water seal. , So it is possible for oil to escape without water getting in, again only what I'm being told.
But when the guy is doing the seals that are passing, he says I can be present, and watch him , very kind I think another wee learning curve, obviously while it's In pieces he said be as well doing impeller as well. Not sure of cost as of yet but he assures me it won't be much, I'll update exactly how much once the job is done.
Not that it matters much but I also found out today the wee Yamaha 6hp is a 2001 model.

He’s right, that there is no point taking the lower leg off to do the gearbox and not replacing the impeller. I’ll be quite impressed if he manages to do it all in an hour. If it’s the very friendly, but somewhat ramshackle guy fairly close to you that’s doing the work - he’ll spend an hour talking before he even gets the tools out!
I can’t comment on the two seals thing - but if something is getting out something else must get in - otherwise you have a vacuum - possibly exhaust gas if it’s not water?

So you know this guy Poly?
Seemingly.spent many years with Ferry Marine, now retired.
Seems genuine enough and yeah likes a good chat.
But I've seen ribs at his lockup and he's currently fitting a big engine in his own boat. Also a fisherman just up the road that swears by him. He certainly don't keep any secrets and is willing to let me oversee the work.

New problem, gear oil.
It may not be the same guy. My mind has gone blank and I can’t remember his name - but he was working from a farm unit near Ratho. He lives in corstorphine direction. I’m sure he spent some time at Ferry before they moved out of SQfy although I suspect most marine mechanics in the Lothians will have.
Ramshakle was a reference to the facility rather than the individual - he did what I asked for a fair price.

Yeah his name is John as you say very friendly, he has a unit in Granton now, but again we end up chatting as I frequently go down to Eyemouth, we have friends down they're he also knows Tim, the guy that runs the rib trips down they're , so I'm just as guilty of chatting to much. Lol.

Well whoever he is you're lucky to have found a reasonable guy. Round here two visits to the dealers with a used 6hp would cost as much as buying it again.
