Not pumping water.

Just replaced the impeller on my OB, reassembled and guess what.
This is my first impeller change so bear with me.
When I fitted the impeller I noticed that it was not tight on the drive shaft and if I turn the drive shaft by hand the impeller does not move.
The impeller is identical to the one removed.
There is a grove on the impeller and the drive shaft so I wonder if these should line up or if I'm missing a part.
Any help greatly appreciated.

there should be a small metal tab that fits in the notch of the shaft and the water pump, making the pump rotate.

You can reuse the existing key, maybe its on the floor of your workshop? Its a very small half circle shaped piece of stainless.

I think the existing key is lost. It's for a mercury 9.9 not a Johnson.
Thanks for the help.
Any dealers on here help with getting one of these?

Then TurboDiesel (Black Dog Marine boat engines - outboard and inboard diesel and petrol motors installed) on here is your man.

You should be able to find the part number on here
Mercury Outboard Parts by Year / Model Number

You should also check that you have the impeller blades curving in the correct direction. I do not know which way the shaft rotates on your engine, maybe someone else could let you know.

Thanks for that, I did spend probably half hour trying to work that out. Hopefully I've got it right.
Note to self put the new one in exactly the same way the old one was and don't loose the key!
