Oil consumption Mercury 225 optimax.

Does anybody know how much the oil consumption should be with this engine?

Now I have used aproxomate 300 liters of fuel and 4.5 liters of oil. Isn't that a bit too much ?

Danny.

On my recent trip to Oban I burned approx 450 litres of fuel and burnt about 4.5 litres of oil. Same engine but I would think the boat would be a little heavier.

does your usage include the remote oil tank filling the tank, under engine cowl approx 1 ltr

This tank was filled allready.

The engine had been running for six hours when I bought her. The mechanic told me that the break in period had passed and that she would not use more oil than normal in the rest of this 20 hour break in period.

Optimax 225 uses approx 50:1 mix of Quicksilver Optimax Oil, so your 300 litres of fuel would have meant an average oil consumption of 6 litres. You appear to be ahead of the game!

I have been running a 225 Optimax for about 2 years and oil consumption has decreased over that period of time. It has been regularly serviced. I am sure that although the running in period is over it will use less oil with more use.

Also depends on the use it gets - if you have a long run up a river at low revs to get to open water you will run at low revs for longer.

I considered I made a compromise when I bought an Opti over a four stroke but have been converted having used one extensively.

apologies for dragging this old thread up but after a but more help

any further thoughts on oil consumption??

225 opti with 185 hours on 7.5 meter rib.

the main tank has around 5 liters of oil in. given the current apparent shortage of oil how long is that 5 liters gonna last??

thanks in advance?

guessing.....somewhere between 50:1 and 100:1

so reckon on around 75:1 and you are probably near the mark...ish

i have not checked mine so have no clue but it never smokes so i would reckon it uses a lot less than a regular 2 stroke so the figures above could be wrong as well.

now i have the entire stocks of Barrus in my garage i seem to have lost what little urge i had before to track oil consumption!!
