oil mix ratio yamaha 6hp two stroke

Hallo l have just got myself a yamaha 6hp 2stroke from 2002 can someone here tell me if l need a oil mix ratio from 100/1 or 50/1 and maybe someone has a pdf manuel for my yamy.

Wrong! It's 1:100 and has been since about 1977. Here's the page from the user manual and a picture of what happens to Pistons when you over oil.Click image for larger version

That may be what is said for alot of engines lean is mean.I would still run at 50-1.

yep, yammies tend to be 100:1 most others (please correct me if im wrong) are 50:1.

Hi all


Just did a bit of digging on the interweb.Seems we could all be right,an iboats thread stated that the engines came with a 100-1 sticker on tank but later there was a change to 50-1,get in touch with yam service centre if in doubt,service recalls are sometimes not readily documented especially with older engines and newer.

Also stated always use good quality marine 2smoke oil,that goes without saying though

You know what? I feel sorry for Barrie. Just bought a small outboard and wants to know the oil ratio, presumably to know how to run and maintain it correctly. My Journeyman worked with outboards for 20 years and was a Yamaha field engineer. I've been either paid to look after outboards or worked on them as a hobby for 30 years. 50 years of combined experience with outboards and millions of Yen spent developing them and providing instruction manuals and user manuals and still there are some who think it's all claptrap. I used to look after a fleet of 150 Yamaha Outboards used in the North Sea! Ive seen the people responsible for fuelling them under oil them and blow them up. Ive seen people over oil them and coke them up. Ive seen what happens when someone premixed diesel and oil by accident. Ive never seen one destroyed by following the manufacturers recommended oil quality and ratios. Ive seen a lot of people pay a fortune to have them repaired by doing exactly what it says not to do! The manual tells you what happens if you do the wrong thing. Rofl, Bolt, Thumbs, smiley face, whatever!Click image for larger version

I was waiting for that one!! Here's where the waters get muddy!

1) I believe Yamaha jetted their carbs and set plug type depending on where in the world they were going.

2) I don't know if Mariner does the same.

3) I believe all Mariners run on 1:50 to be the same as Mercury. Critically the 55 Mariners run a B7HS plug (hotter) than the B8HS plug (colder) on the yamaha.

4) I asked the importer once why engines (that appear identical) run different oil mixes and plug specs. The answer was that they didn't know.

5) The 1974 Yams all ran on 1:50 premix.

7) By the early 1980s Yamaha had developed the drainless oil recirculation system which allowed them to drop oil use by 50%

8) Crucially engines like the twin cylinder 60 Mariner was different from the Yamaha one. It had a different saddle for instance using the old external shock absorbers rather than the larger brackets and internal shock.

9) My overriding thought is that the Mariner was in some respects the old technology that you could use globally. It may have looked identical but could lack the same amount (if any) drainless valves.

10) I have a collection of old Yammy 55s all with subtle differences.

11) my advice is to always do what it says in the manual.

my yamaha manual states 100/1 using only yamaha 2 stroke oil. Its a 1982
