Opinions: Volvo D3 190HP vs VW Marine TDi 165-5

As above - Two diesel engines produced in Europe; both 5 cylinder engines.

Does anyone have any relevant opinions or useful reviews/experiences with either?

Essentially I'm looking at the 165HP VW engine as a replacement for the 190HP D3; both running a jackshafted Stern drive.

Those arent the only 5 cylinder options, dont dismiss the Lombardini Marine LDW245JMT.

Its essentially a 2.4ltr, 5cyl, 200hp, common rail lump.

The engines, like the smaller 4cyl, 160hp are available as bobtail, gearbox, MerCruiser Bravo 1 outdrive, or with the right kit to couple up to existing older Volvo Penta outdrives.

Worth a look : http://www.lombardinimarine.com

Spec looks good on those Lombardinis. Any experience of them in RIBs?

No, not yet really.

They are used extensively outside of the UK, many manufactures, RIB manufactures included.

Nun too subtly way of saying this really… But, ‘we’ will give someone a serious deal on one of these engine packages, simply to get some units out there in the UK ‘RIB world’.

Unfortunately I am not an inboard type RIB myself, not big enough!

I've no real first hand experience of either, but I've been looking at the VW 225 to re-power my parents motor boat. It's a very well designed bit of kit, with the usual thought and attention to detail you get on VW engineering and it was designed by VW for marine use. Easy to service and quiet, light and economical. Never had any complaints with the version in my car!

I wish they would marinise the v6 tdi, bags of torque and a shorter engine.
I have thought about aquiring one from a car, but the electronics are so integrated into the car, I think it would be a nightmare to sort out.

hi

I was under the impression that the v6 tdi ( 3 litre) is the VW 225 which is the same engine in vw toureg and audi a6

i am also lead to belive that the 5 cylinder tdi from vw is the same unit which is the old unit out of the transporter or half the v10 tdi !!!

but as usual iam probably wrong !

Nope, I'm with you on this one Andy. AFAIK the 225 is a v6 though possibly a 2.5l if IRC. The smaller ones are the 5 pot audi/vw engines.

I somehow doubt you'd ever get one from a donor car to work in a boat. There's bound to be so many differences such as the extra sensors in a car and a different fuel/ecu map.

Aha, I was only aware of the 5 cylinder. I have the v6 in my car. Got 56 mpg driving from chichester to leatherhead via the A29.

Nick.

The 5 pot is based on the older VW/Audi motor old tec not that heavily reliant on the electronic wizardry…. But I suspect all the new high pressure TDI motors whether marine or road need an ECU and associated sensors to get the performance and economy.

Hence why the Redbay boys like the non electronic Yanmar engines.

Hell if you can get the bits to run it in a boat why not… but I think you would struggle on space in a RS 5.4
