Optimax 90 HP outboard.

I am thinking of putting one on a 5.6 m Avon for diving use.
Are they reliable and as fuel efficient as the blurb says?
Any opinions, good or bad, gratefully received.

I was always a bit of 4 stoke fan till I got a boat with an opti fitted. I love it now - yes I had some minor electrical problems ( not the engine I stress ) with the battery and understand they can be 'a bit' sensitive to having enough volts to crank & spark up properly. Thats waht I was told by a couple of poeple but not sure what ' a bit' really means ! I have a 200 that pushes a heavy 7.5m boat along at 50knts WOT & if driven sensibly gives a fraction over 1lt a mile ( around 25-30 knts ish), and doesn't use much oil, doesn't smoke & is not overly noisy for a bigish engine.

The only minor thing I would say if is at lowish revs when I'm forced to go slow mines pops abit - maybe due to being the V6 ? Not a problem as such - just make me think I have broken it or its about to stop ( its not ever done either ).

Agree with the above, I have a 115 on a 5.8m and it will do 40kts and at around 25kts do 1.8miles/ltr.

A great noise and only use about 7 litres of oil over a season of about 80+ hours of use.

It does not "like" long periods of running at sub-planning speeds, as the temp rises but stays below any dangerous temps. Therefore there is always an excuse to open her up and enjoy.
Regards
Steve

RIBase
I'd get the 115 opti over the 90. Same weight, same CC...

And based on next week new optimax prices, only a £1,500 extra price tag

But as luck would have it. I just happen to have one left at the old price.

Would a 5.4 SR be rated to take a 115?

No, but abc is looking for a motor for a 5.6 Avon. If it's a 5.60 Adventure, then it's rated to 115hp.
