optimax oil

need to buy some Optimax DFI oil, anyone here no any stockists worth contacting.
anywhere close to the M3 down to southampton or even mail order would be fine.

Think you will find Hugh Jardon has just about drunk the South Coast dry with the tanker load he's just bought as we are about to have a drout of Opti Oil..... apparently

ive just tried Alladins cave and the other ones down there, and they have sold out, did find a small dealer with some and they wanted £35 per 4 litres!! ripoff

Get a 4 Stroke.

Seriously when I ran a two stroke I found the addition of buying 2 stroke oil expensive. And it sounds especially expensive for you Opti boys. Their is one consolation those Opti's sound good.

guys

you can quite happily use quicksilver premium plus 2 stroke oil in your optis, you will find dealers put it in and it is listed in the manual

dfi is better but it will work just fine with premium plus, it is cheaper as well!

Just rigging a 150 Opti and its cost me £30.10 for 4litres of Opti oil!!

£60 has only just filled the tank.

codders, heres a little test for you to test your googling skills and the chance to make some opti owners very happy.......

identify for us an oil with the same spec as quicksilver premium plus or quicksilver dfi that barrus/mercury would be happy to continue offering the warranty against if used.

i am sure lots of opti owners would line up to buy you a drink if you could find approved oils that mercury would accept as ok and not invalidate warranties and costs 10 quid instead of 60 quid

the fact of the matter is that in the manual it specifies to use quicksilver dfi or premium plus

text from service mgr at barrus .....

"Please see following copy of the recommend two stroke for this particular
outboard. This page was taken from the owners handbook and as you can see
the minimum specification oil is TCW III premium plus, any lower
specification oil may result in engine damage, hence using standard TCW III
will invalidate warranty."

personally i am not bothered as i am happy to use dfi over the cheaper premium plus as it has a higher synthetic content and i have loads of oil to see me thru the warranty period anyway.

but you might do others a favor

Where did the service manager at Barrus get that from - it does NOT appear to be in the official Mercury manual does it???

I have looked at the Rock Oil and the Mercury oil and they look identical - they are the same greeny blue colour - they smell the same and they have the same viscosity and specific gravity. I appreciate without a HFFR test and gas chromatography I can't say for definite they are the same but all the evidence looks that way.

TCW3 doesn't have a "premium plus" section. I have looked at data from oils that claim to be "premium plus" and also normal TCW3 oils and the specs are the same.

Maybe "premium plus" means semi synthetic? If so the Rock Oil is also a semi synthetic.

It really annoys me when companies rip people off and make a fortune by just rebranding standard stuff and getting people to pay top whack for it.

I suspect that if the major 2 stroke outboard makers were European they wouldn't get away with the scare tactics under free market EU laws.

yes it does appear in the manual, that is an extract

i did some careful research and although i suspect most dfi oils are quite similar......you just dont know and i have heard from a couple of sources that mercury wont honour warranty if the quicksilver dfi or premium plus oil has not been used.

so for me the 3 year warranty on the opti is very important so happy to use their oil......if i was to use cheaper oil then i might save 7 quid a gallon......so to be honest i am happy to buy the dfi oil for peace of mind. per annum it dont make a lot of difference in the big scheme of things...

It's not really the cost it's the principle - Mercury buy the oil in vast bulk for next to nothing and then charge people an arm and a few legs.

I suspect that under European law Mercury could be in a lot of trouble if they MAKE people use only their branded oil.

But they aren't that's the problem. In bulk you can get good quality semi synthetic TCW3 for about £2.40 a litre.

Well its a new engine so I wanted to use the pukka stuff.

The warranty is worth a lot of money so its important as far as I'm concerned to buy the correct stuff.

Anyway its cheap compared to the stuff I have to put in my audi!! (1ltr = £18!!!)
