Outboard Fuel Consumption Rates

Notice a member asking about fuel consumption hope this helps

Found this on the Tohatsu outboards web site, gives some idea of the the fuel consumption of different size outboards.

Very interesting - not as much difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke as I'd imagined. Typically a 2 stroke burning 25%-30% more than a 4 stroke.

I think a big chunk of the gains are due to carb v EFI. You do see a step drop in consumption between a 2 stroke on carb and a 4 stroke with EFI.

I would think that a SIB hull is going to be a big factor also as well as, obviously, weight?

Very rough rule-of-thumb, every 1000 rpm increase doubles the fuel usage

That's good to know.

My 4hp Yam will potter all day without needing to refill the internal tank. I've a memory that the Dory with the 40 Yam would get down the Beaulieu River and smack across to Cowes and back without making an enormous dent in the 5 US gallon tank but I was wondering how much of the 25L tank I'll end up using mucking about for a day with the Excel and 15hp Mariner/Yam.

The 25L tank should be way more than enough but I was wondering how close I'd be to getting away with a smaller tank such as a 12L.

Ive used this one for reference over the years and find it pretty accurate. You can select litres of gallons etc and most engines both inboard and outboard.
